What happens when 28 youth groups comprising over 700 people get away to live in the mountains together for a week? A lot happens. Add to that Pastor John MacArthur, Rapper Lacrae, administrative genius’ like Jeremiah Kirberg, and wrap it all in a neat little package at Glorieta Conference Center, and you have a week of unforgettable (and literally life-changing) memories.

The band was phenomenal. And it’s not all glitz and glam (as the photos may seem).
These guys and gals sacrificed more time than most of us will ever know. Much practice, prayer, and preparation went into Camp ReGen worship times.

Epic games amidst epic backdrops.

Below, please insert the phrase, “Sharkface!!!!!”

The preaching, brought to you by Austin Duncan, Rick Holland, and John MacArthur, was phenomenal, and as Austin would say, “very helpful.”

It was my joy to have the opportunity to shoot photos at camp, and look forward already to next year.

When I first met Johnny and Paola, it was at everyone’s favorite Bible College, CBS Houston. All three of us worked at CBS in various departments, and had the opportunity to get to know one another through various interactions around design projects I was working on. Johnny and Paola both worked in Student Recruiting together, and one thing was clear about them: not that they were falling in love with one another, but that they both were falling deeper in love with Christ.

In fact, when I found out that they were engaged, I was actually quite surprised, and I think that’s exactly how it should be. They chose to honor God in their dating and marriage in such a way that it was clear where their priorities were. Johnny and Paola, I commend you for your faithfulness to do what many people are not willing or are not able to do: to put God first. Bravo. May your marriage ever be a testimony of God’s faithfulness to us.

Oh yeah, and they asked me to shoot their wedding too (sweet!) and now… here are some of my favorites from that day.

The clouds and the sun were in perfect symphony, and I was thankful for the excellent vantage point from atop the hill. I shot this handheld as 12 different images, which I stitched together using Photoshops “Merge to Panorama” feature straight from the Lightroom plugin.

One of the highlight events for The College of Biblical Studies is the Annual Scholarship Banquet. Each year, God uses this banquet to raise priceless scholarship money that helps CBS to “Develop Multi-Ethnic Christian Leaders.” The keynote speakers are always great, but the best part has consistently been the opportunity to hear heartfelt testimony from students and graduates about how God has used CBS in their lives.

While i’ve attended for several years, at the 2009 Scholarship Banquet, I had the priviledge of being the Photographer as well. As I have been building the website for this years Scholarship Banquet, I was digging through stuff from last year’s event, and thought I would put a few of my favorite shots up here. What a joy it was to capture these precious moments in the history of the College.

For me, one of the best parts this time around was hearing from the “Dynamic Duo” of Pastor William Lindsey and his wife, Shawn (image below). With each of them addressing a packed out crowd and sharing their heart, it was massively encouraging to hear how God has used CBS to equip them for ministry together in their church as husband and wife. Having already known William and Shawn previously, it was my joy not just to hear their testimony, but to know that it came from two people who have a genuine passion to see their church grown in the knowledge of God. Not only that, but William – you guys look sharp bro!

The tables are always set perfectly, with every little excellent detail in it’s place. Speaking of excellent details, check out those chocolate mousse cakes!

The River Oaks Country Club is a beautiful location, inside and out. Here’s a few shots I snagged outside just before things got going inside.

I also got to shoot the video’s for the event, which we’re really just simple one-camera shots to document the student testimonies and keynote speaker. So here’s the view from behind the camera.

I recently had the opportunity to design some folders for The Center for Leader Development – Houston. It was a fairly simple task, since we had already established a brand identity for the CLD, I just had to stick to the brand. Additionally, the good Dr. Ayers knew exactly what he wanted on the folder, even going so far as to send me the exact number for the iStockPhoto he wanted to use of the tree. Sweet.

Since the folder is a very rectangular/geometric element, I wanted to add something that would break the lines a bit and make it feel a little warmer and organic. A little less boxy and more human. Thus, the big curves extending above and below the primary graphic.

Here is the outside of the folder, with the front of the folder on your right, and the back of the folder on your left.

Below is the inside of the folder, exactly as you would see it if you were holding it in your hand. The first design had a more spacious left side layout, with no pocket on the left. I didn’t really like the idea of putting a pocket in a place where it’s contents would obstruct the text, but the client needed two pockets for a specific purpose. So, form follows function, I suppose. In the end, I’m still generally pleased with the final results, and seeing them back from the print shop before our deadline is always a rewarding feeling.

I added some slots to the right side pocket, where people would be able to put their business card in before handing it out. Down the road, i’d really like to design some business cards for the CLD where the stripe on the folder is carried onto the business card to match the design when it’s inserted. That’s the kind of project that get’s me super stoked, is taking multiple pieces and making them work together to form a collective whole.

DEETS: Of course, the logo was originally done in illustrator. The rest of this project was all InDesign, except for a few minutes in Photoshop. The original tree photo for the cover didn’t have enough horizontal landscape to it, so I repeated the grass and cloned the big cloud on the right, the surrounding sky, and all the grass underneath it. This bought us the real estate to have the photo stretch all the way across the folders front.

I recently had a great opportunity to create all of the Promotional Material for Houston’s Biblical Counseling Conference. With “big name” speakers like Randy Patten (Executive Director of NANC), Rich Thompson (Author, The Heart of Man and Mental Disorders), and Nic Ellen (Professor of Biblical Counseling, College of Biblical Studies), it was a joy to have the opportunity to be a part of it all.

Not only did I have the opportunity to be part of the team who named the event and wrote the tagline (stolen from the verse itself), I also had the priviledge of designing all original artwork from scratch, and was responsible for the branding process for the entire event. So what’s that mean? Well, it means I have a really fun job. As of the writing of this post, the page and video are still up at www.2tim316.org. You can see all the original artwork I created below, from the video and the posters and brochures, to the web page and web banner ads.

Here’s the primary art I created to represent the brand. This functioned as the fliers and the posters, and the starting point for all the other graphics.

By modifying the original branding art, I created the homepage to www.2tim3.16.com, which essentially just functioned as a placeholder for the video to play. I decided to place all the details for the event on a second page in order to keep the focus here on the video.

The second page of the website was essentially nothing more that GOBS of information, so it provided an interesting opportunity to work on typography and text layout, which have been an area of necessary growth for me over the last few years. Here’s the finalized layout for the second page.

And, of course, I had the chance to put together several different clickable web banner graphics for ad spaces on different websites. For example:

Overall, the process from start to finish was a lot of fun, and the end result turned out fairly well. Of course, with every project, you look back and wish you had done a few things differently, but such is the learning process. In the end, the turnout for the event was more than 200% what they had anticipated, so that was exciting. It’s a very rewarding feeling to have been used by God to put my abilities into use for the building of His kingdom.

I always assumed that “true love” was really just a myth that we all spend our lives chasing. Here’s why. I found that my love for others was tainted and weak. It was selfish and easily swayed. We are miserably unfaithful creatures– us humans. At the same time, over the years, the truth became even more apparent – that no one has been able to love me in the way that I really want to be loved. Their love, like mine, was fragile and small.

So I decided: True Love is a Myth.

But I discovered that I was wrong. In fact, quite literally, I couldn’t have been further from the truth. But more than that, I discovered WHY I was wrong. I was wrong because I didn’t know what love was in the first place. I was looking for the wrong thing. You don’t go searching for someone to satisfy you and love you perfectly. Nobody on earth can do that. And yet, the fact remains that there is a desire in each one of us to be loved in that way. So here’s the deal: Success in marriage is not finding the right person, but being the right person in the power of the one perfect Person. You see, it is God’s true love for us that is the only TRUE love. It not only teaches us how to love, but it enables us to love truly.

God has blessed me with the most amazing wife I could have ever asked for. Frankly, I dreamed small and asked selfishly– but God had much bigger plans. He has given me an incomparably incredible woman. But He also gave me true love. No no – TRUE true love. And it is His perfect love that both teaches and enables Claire and I to truly love one another, and has made our marriage what it is today. So here are a few photos in honor of my wife, Claire, and in honor of the One who invented marriage, Jesus Christ.

Thank you sweetheart for being such an example to me of God’s love for us. You’re the bomb.

It’s been a blessing to me seeing Eric and Tara enjoying each other so much, taking classes together at CBS, and hanging out around campus all the time. Their love is a testimony to God’s grace, and their wedding ceremony was no different. I am sure that all of that is just a reflection of what their marriage will also prove to be.

Eric’s mom made all the cakes. No, seriously. She MADE all the cakes!
She clearly demonstrated baking skills that were far superior to any I had seen before.
She’s been doing this so long she’s in research and development. Ever had that Honey thing at KFC? Yeah, she invented that. For real.

This was a priceless moment I captured at the beginning of the ceremony…

And here’s the shot you were waiting for…The Kiss.

But the best part of the day was when I busted Casey in the kitchen eating the chocolate covered strawberries.
Hi Casey! Told ya I was gonna put it on the blog!!

…and the Drumm Studios patented fishie-faces bridal shot…Â (love it!)

Eric and Tara, thank you so much for inviting us to be a part of your special day. We’re so thankful to have been counted among your friends and family, and so thrilled to see you two really honoring the Lord with your lives and your marriage. May He bless you always, and remember: “A successful marriage in NEVER the product of romance. A successful marriage is the product of worship, and romance is a bi-product of a successful marriage.” -Paul Tripp

That’s cute, but it just isn’t so much the case with us. I’m sure that I teach Tim a few things along the way, but truth be told, I don’t really feel that he is that much younger than I am. I feel in many ways that we are walking alongside each other, learning together along the way. And the reality is that I learn as much from Tim as he’s ever learned from me, so it makes me more thankful for our relationship than I’ll ever figure out how to say in a silly blog post. Basically, Tim and Katie = awesome. That’s why when they needed some new photos for their website (TKD Graphics), I was stoked to have the chance to help out. By the way, check out their website.

Even though I typically prefer to shoot photos in natural light, they needed to go for a more formal look for their photos, so we busted out the ol’ studio lights and had a blast. Here are a few of the shots we got.

For Photographers: we were specifically going for the a certain look with the lights, with Tim really appreciating the double blown highlights on both sides. I shot my main through a diffusion panel literally 1 inch to camera left, and about 5 feet from Tim, and 2 strobes behind him about ten feet on either side. All strobes were triggered with Pocket Wizards, shot with my Canon 50D, and processed in PSCS3 and Lightroom 2. As a side note, I basically have a Strobist lighting setup (http://www.mpex.com/page.htm?PG=STROBIST2XKITS) with some additional things I picked up to jazz it up. The backdrop is a really expensive special order from France $15 sheet from Walmart. These grey sheets work great because you can gel a strobe and make it any color you want, add a cookie and you’ve got a different texture for every shoot you do.
